Embracing You: The Magic of Self-Appreciation

In the hustle and bustle of life, self-appreciation often takes a back seat. It's all too tempting to focus on our flaws and weaknesses, overlooking the positive impact that appreciating ourselves can have on our mental health, overall well-being, and relationships.

Understanding self-appreciation is key; it's not about arrogance or self-centredness. Instead, it's the acknowledgment of our worth and value as individuals. By incorporating the practice of appreciating ourselves, we're cultivating the ability to recognise our strengths and abilities, boosting self-confidence and paving the way for a life we truly want.

The Importance of Self-Appreciation

Self-appreciation is more than essential—it's a cornerstone for well-being and personal growth. When we appreciate ourselves, positive self-image and self-esteem follow suit, leading to improved mental health, relationships, and life satisfaction.

Beyond that, self-appreciation equips us with resilience in the face of challenges. Handling criticism and rejection becomes smoother, and the constant need for external validation diminishes.

If self-appreciation feels like a challenge for you, rest assured, you're not alone. Building a healthy dose of self-appreciation takes time; it's a journey worth embarking on.

And here's the exciting part: when we practice self-appreciation, it transforms how we show up in our relationships. Imagine it as playing the WeShare Connection Cards, where embracing your authentic self becomes the game-changer. How do you envision showing up for others when you’re grounded in self-appreciation?

Practicing Self Appreciation

In the realm of maintaining good mental health and well-being, self-appreciation stands as a pillar. It involves recognising our strengths and accomplishments while accepting the parts of ourselves that may not be our favourites. This practice can build self-confidence, improve relationships, and reduce stress and anxiety.

Here are some practical ways to weave self-appreciation into daily life:

Daily Self-Appreciation Exercises

Start each day with a compassionate word to yourself. You could remind yourself of positive affirmation statements like "I am capable and worthy," "I am loved and appreciated," and "I am grateful for all that I have." While these statements may not seem like much, their potential to set a positive tone for your day becomes especially pronounced when infused with positive emotion. Maintaining a gratitude journal, jotting down three things to be thankful for daily, helps focus on the positive aspects of life.

Overcoming Self-Criticism

Many of us can be our own worst critics, dwelling on mistakes and perceived shortcomings. To counter this, practice self-compassion. Treat yourself with kindness, just as you would a good friend. Challenge negative self-talk by questioning its validity or accepting where you are and reminding yourself of future opportunities for change or improvement.

Celebrating Personal Achievements

Another way to practise self-appreciation is by celebrating our personal achievements, the big ones and (especially) the small ones. This can involve rewarding ourselves for our hard work, treating ourselves to something we enjoy, or simply acknowledging our accomplishments with a pat on the back. One practice I really enjoy is writing down my self-acknowledgements on colourful sticky notes, folding them over and putting them into a glass jar. Not only do I love watching it fill up, but the jar looks great, and I’m constantly reminded that all those notes are a worthy representation and a celebration of me. By celebrating our successes, we can boost our self-confidence and motivation, and feel proud of ourselves for who we are.

By regularly practicing self-appreciation, overcoming self-criticism, and celebrating personal achievements, a greater sense of self-worth and self-love can be cultivated. Keep embracing the magic within you!
